See, experience and understand water – for the whole family: under this motto, the garden explores the various wetland habitats of the Waldviertel region, featuring typical plants such as sphagnum moss, sundew, water lilies and the characteristic grasses found in each habitat. Walk-through water terraces illustrate the banks and siltation zones of a pond, right through to the formation of a fen. Typical water garden features such as a stream and a spring stone are integrated into the garden. Rope-pull rafts, a water adventure trail and the natural otter enclosure add to the interactive experience.
In the UnterWasserReich’s water garden, you can experience the diversity of the Waldviertel wetlands, which you will have learnt about in the exhibition in the ‘Theory’ section.
With a little patience, you can spot frogs, grass snakes, dragonflies and butterflies as you stroll across the water terraces.
Every year, the “Golden Hedgehog” award is presented to those show gardens that impress in terms of both quality and scope, whilst also meeting the “Natur im Garten” criteria – no pesticides, no synthetic chemical fertilisers and no peat – throughout a single season.
The water garden at UnterWasserReich was designed by the landscape architecture firm DI Gerhard Prähofer and is also maintained by them on an ongoing basis – we are delighted to have received this award since 2015!
